Ingredients
For the Chicken Patties
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (panko with Italian seasoning recommended)
- 1/4 cup marinara sauce
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- Salt & pepper, to taste
For Cooking
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
- 1 3/4 cups marinara sauce (divided: 1/4 cup in mixture, 1 1/2 cups for cooking)
- 4 slices mozzarella cheese (or grated mozzarella)
- 4 hamburger buns
- Basil for garnish (optional)
- Butter for toasting buns
Instructions
- Prepare the chicken mixture: In a medium bowl, combine ground chicken, grated Parmesan, breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup marinara sauce, chopped onion, minced garlic, and fresh parsley. Season with salt and pepper, then mix thoroughly using a large spoon or your hands until evenly combined. Form the mixture into four equal-sized patties.
- Cook the patties: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place the chicken patties in the skillet and cook until golden brown on one side, about 4 to 5 minutes. Alternatively, you may grill the patties for 4 minutes per side until no longer pink inside.
- Add marinara and melt cheese: Flip the patties and immediately pour the remaining marinara sauce around them in the skillet. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, reducing heat if the sauce bubbles too rapidly. Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on each patty, cover the skillet, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and the chicken is fully cooked through.
- Toast the buns: While the patties finish cooking, lightly butter the hamburger buns and toast them in a 350°F oven for about 5 minutes until warmed through and slightly crispy.
- Assemble the burgers: Spoon extra marinara sauce from the skillet onto the bottom halves of the toasted buns. Place the cheesy chicken patties on top, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and cover with the top bun halves. Serve immediately and enjoy your Italian Chicken Burgers!
Notes
- For a gluten-free version, substitute gluten-free breadcrumbs and buns.
- You can use grated mozzarella cheese instead of slices if preferred.
- These burgers can also be grilled instead of cooked in a skillet for a smokier flavor.
- Make sure the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F for safety.
- Use fresh basil for garnish to enhance the Italian flavor.
